Heart Fm Wedding Show – Part 1

Over the weekend one of the biggest wedding fayres in the South East took place. A massive show with some of the top suppliers across Essex and a great place to go meet suppliers and get ideas for your big day. Here are a few pictures from one of the marquees, supplied by the fabulous Vicarage Marquees, catering from Fuud Ltd and entertainment from Unforgettable, our brand new saxophone/vocal duo from Essex wedding music company, Groove Music Management.

The Band in the News

Bride of the month – Karen

Over the last twelve months we have featured quite heavily in bridal magazines and newspapers so I thought I post some of them onto our blog. Early last year the band played for Adam and Karen at Three Rivers Golf and Country Club. We had the 7 piece band and because Adam is Jewish the band played some traditional Israeli music for dancing, which we love. We got the happy couple up on chairs with their hankies, it was great fun.
Karen subsuquently won ‘Bride of the Month’ in the local Gazette newspaper and I’m delighted to say has now been nominated for ‘Bride of the Year’

Heart FM Wedding Fayre

Essex wedding band, One Foot in the Groove are often asked by potential clients if they can come and see the band live before they book. Its a perfectly reasonable question, after all you want to know what you are getting before you part with any money. In reality that’s much harder. Most professioanl wedding bands don’t do public gigs, all of their work is for private clients, in our case 95% of our work comes from weddings, so its impossible for a prospective client to come along and see us. You can’t really gate crash someone elses wedding!
One Sunday 19th February the band will be playing at The Brentwood Centre, at The Heart FM Wedding Show. The band will be playing at regular intervals between 10am and 3pm. You will get the chance to see and hear us. The Jazz Collective will also be playing, if you are looking for some lovely background music for your drinks reception and or wedding breakfast and we also hope to launch our acoustic duo, Acoustic Grooves. A duo of guitar/vocals and female vocals. A very comtemporary option for couples again looking for some live music for their drinks reception and or wedding breakfast. These two smaller bands can be combined with Herts and Essex wedding band, One Foot in the Groove to provide live music for the duration of your wedding day.
Take a look at our bespoke wedding page on the bands website for more information on what we can do for your wedding. If you have any questions come and down and see us at the Brentwood Centre on Sunday 19th February

Snow, what impact can the weather have on your wedding?

On Saturday, Essex wedding band, One Foot in the Groove headed up to Milton Hill House in Abingdon, Oxfordshire for the wedding of Colin and Emma. We knew that snow was on the way, but obviously that wasn’t going to stop us making the gig, and everyone did, and on time. The journey home wasn’t great but we all made it back safely, thank goodness.

What happens if it snows on your wedding day? Whilst its very romantic, it can cause problems. If you are planning a winter wedding book local suppliers. For example don’t book a photographer that lives 80 miles away. In the run up to the day when you know that snow is expected, make sure all of your guests have one contact number of a reliable guest, so that they can keep in touch should the weather hold them up. Ask your church or registra if they have any weddings scheduled after you, that way if things run a little late it won’t be a problem, they will be able to wait for any late arrivals before the ceremony starts.

If it does snow prior to the big day, just double check with suppliers that everything is OK. If you’ve booked professionals they will be well prepared for bad weather. Its worth having a back up music source, should your band or DJ have a problem getting to you. Get an ipod with plenty of music, make sure it also has your first dance. The problem with DJ’s/bands, is that they will often be arriving later in the day when the weather may have deteriated and the band could be arriving in a number of vehicles. I know of a band who couldn’t get to a wedding because the snow was so bad. The couple had no music at all on their wedding day. Essex party band, One Foot in the Groove  have also had problems over the years, but we’ve always made it, although one year on a journey up the A12 the snow came down and the band went on stage 20 minutes before the end of a Christmas party. The guests weren’t too bothered as only 10 out of 200 had turned up. The venue knew there were going to be problems that night, but wouldn’t cancel and reschedule, bit silly really.

You can’t of course cancel your wedding, but when planning a winter wedding there are a few things you can do to make it less stressful if the weather takes a turn for the worse. I always say to brides you can make the perfect wedding plans, but you can’t plan what the weather might do.

How Much Do You Charge?? part 2

Thought I’d finish my post on the cost of a great band. When you are getting quotes from bands for your wedding or party, always compare like for like. If you have decided on a duo then only get prices for duo’s, you’ll be shocked if you have to compare that to the price of a 6 piece band. They will obviously cost more. More musicians, more money.

Find out if the costs are inclusive, travel, early set up time if you need it and VAT. Don’t be put off by a band that charges VAT. I know it will mean the band will cost  more, but a band charging VAT needs to be turning over £70,000 through their work. If a band is turning over that sort of money it means they are busy, if they are busy then they are pretty good. It also means they are running the band as a business not just as a bit of fun. To you, as the customer they take their work seriously, so they will take playing at your big day seriously.

That brings me on to customer service. Essex wedding band, One Foot in the Groove take our customer service very seriously, after all we are often being asked to provide you with music for one of the most important days of your life and it has to be perfect. From your very first email to me right up until the last note is played I am available to answer any questions, whatever they are. If you are booking a whole package with us then I like to meet you both and chat through everything, especially when we are talking about music for your wedding ceremony. I can often give you some ideas and tell you things you may not have thought about. It also means on the day, you know who I am, you know that we are nice people and you know that you and your guests will have a wonderful time.

Someone once said to me, a great band is never cheap and a cheap band is never great. Don’t you deserve a great band on your wedding day.

P.S. Don’t let the band in the photobooth at your wedding!

Fennes Open Day

Last Sunday I was at The Fennes open day with my colleague Ian, we were launching our new saxophone/vocal duo, Unforgettable. A great option if you are looking for music for your ceremony, drinks reception and/or wedding breakfast. It was lovely to see so many familiar faces of suppliers whose work we love and respect and great to chat to some lovely couples about their forthcoming weddings.
If you are still looking at venues for your big day then take the time to visit The Fennes in Bocking. Its exclusively yours for the day. A beautiful georgian house set in 100 acres of Essex countryside. This gorgeous house has two fabulous pavillions, which you need to go into the house to see them properly, as its hard to picture from the outside. One has a nighclub area, brilliant if you are having a DJ in the evening. The bar is in the same room, which is always better and this is attached to the main house and where you would also hold your civil ceremony of you choose to have one.
The second pavillion can seat up to 360 people for your wedding breakfast, or can be used for the evening reception if you are having a live band. They also have great deals if you are happy to get married mid week and the staff are great.

How much do you charge?? Part 1

I really felt that I had to write another post on prices as generally people have no idea how much a live band will cost for thier event. Prices can vary, not by hundreds of pounds but by thousands. Believe me you will always get what you pay for and that applies to anything in life. Now I’m all for getting a good deal, especially in the times we live in. However I draw the line at getting part timers to do any job that a full time professinal should do. For example I wouldn’t get my next door neighbour who has a lovely new digital camera to take my wedding photos, too much of a gamble for your big day. I would pay a professional to capture my wedding day and I’d be happy in the knowledge that I could leave it to them to get on with their job and that I would have some fabulous photos afterwards.

The same goes for the band. Whilst the 5 piece band that have quoted me only £600 to play at my wedding, might be cheap what exactly am I getting?
I am getting 5 people that enjoy playing music at the weekends, but they work during the week in whatever they do. The band is a bit of fun and extra cash at the weekend. If they don’t make their living out of music then  they just aren’t good enough. That may seem harsh but its true. The best musicians are full time professionals. This is how they earn their living.  You won’t find them in the office during the week. Trust me you have to be pretty darn good to make a living out of playing music.

Now, whilst at £600 they are cheap, how many weddings do they do each year? how big is their playlist? what happens if one of them can’t make it? I’ll answer those for you. They don’t do many weddings, they have their rehearsed 2 x 1 hours of live music which they will play in the same order as they do everytime they play. They won’t be able to take any of your requests because they only know those songs and if one of them is ill or decides to take a holiday when its your wedding, then they will cancel!! I can’t tell you the number of calls I receive every year from brides whose band has let them down at the last minute. When I ask them how much they were paying I tell them that’s why the band have cancelled. To the band, it doesn’t matter whether they play for your wedding or party or not. Their reputation doesn’t depend on it, a proffessional Essex wedding and party band like One Foot in the Groove will never cancel. We just replace the musician who can’t make it with another equally talented musician and you are non the wiser. You shouldn’t have to worry about anything. Do you really want your special day ruined by an inexperienced band?

Next time we’ll look at VAT, customer service, comparing like for like and the difference a great band can make at your event.

Music in between the bands live sets

What happens when the band aren’t playing?? Unlike a lot of wedding bands in Essex, we play for up to 2.5 hours, most only do 2 hours of live music, so what happens when the band are having a break? Ball park times for an evening reception are about 8pm until midnight. If your wedding band are only going to play for 2 x 1 hour sets, there are two hours of your evening reception to fill.

Some couples opt to hire a DJ to fill in between the band. One Foot in the Groove are delighted to have now teamed up with AKN discos www.akindiscos.co.uk to provide a complete package of DJ and live music. The package is great value for money and you get the absolute best of both worlds for your wedding. A top wedding band in Essex and a professional Essex DJ.

What if the budget won’t stretch to both? Make sure the band that you hire can provide music in their breaks. We do this by means of an ipod. The music we have is a real mix of classics, chart, pop and its all mixed professionally in the same way that a DJ would mix it, there just isn’t anyone taking requests, but your guests can carry on dancing if they want.

We also allow our couples to provide us with an ipod of music they’d like to hear during our breaks if they want to and we plug this into the bands PA. All good wedding bands should be able to give you this option. Its not always necessary to have both band and DJ but if your band don’t play for long it really is worth thinking about. If you organising any other sort of event or party, then its definately worth considering a band and a DJ package.
